Current Conditions and Seasonal Updates from Captain Will Merritt
Umpqua River - Douglas, OR
As we move into the heart of spring, the diversity of the Oregon coast is on full display. From the deep waters off the Charleston Marina to the steady flows of the Umpqua River, the transition from winter runs to spring species is providing plenty of opportunities for those looking to get on the water.
Ocean & Bay Update The year-round bottom fishing remains the most consistent option for our guests. We have been finding good numbers of rockfish and various bottom species during our 8-hour offshore trips. The weather windows are beginning to open up more frequently, allowing us to reach the more productive reefs with ease.
For those looking for a localized harvest, the crabbing in Coos Bay has been productive. Many of our recent groups have opted to add the $50 crabbing upgrade to their bottom fishing trips, heading back to the docks with both heavy coolers and full crab limits.
Umpqua River Update On the river side, we are wrapping up the tail end of the steelhead season and preparing for the arrival of Shad in May. The water levels on the Umpqua have remained favorable for the drift boat, allowing us to navigate to the more secluded holes.
Looking Ahead We are officially taking bookings for the upcoming Halibut season starting in May. With our specialized electric reels, these trips are the perfect way to target deepwater giants without the physical strain of manual cranking. Additionally, the Smallmouth Bass activity will begin to pick up as the water warms, providing high-action days for those who prefer light-tackle river fishing.
Whether you want to head offshore for a full day of bottom fishing or drift the Umpqua for a quiet day on the river, now is the time to secure your dates.
