How To Secure Your Oregon Saltwater Fishing Permits

Navigating the licensing requirements for a successful trip on the Oregon coast is straightforward once you know the essentials. Whether you are planning a deep-sea excursion from the Charleston Marina or a drift boat trip on the Umpqua River, most anglers aged 12 and older must possess a valid fishing license issued by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). For those visiting the region, a standard resident is defined as anyone who has lived in Oregon for at least six consecutive months prior to their application; everyone else will need a non-resident license.

Choosing the Right License and Tag

Oregon offers several flexible options tailored to your length of stay. For short-term visitors, the 1-Day Angling and Shellfish license is a popular choice, priced at $29 for both residents and non-residents in 2026. If your trip extends further, you might consider a 2-Day ($48) or 3-Day ($68) license. For dedicated non-resident anglers, an annual license is $138, while residents pay $50. It is important to note that if you are targeting specific trophy species like salmon, steelhead, or halibut, you must also purchase a Combined Angling Tag.

Saltwater vs. Freshwater Rules

When fishing with One More Guide Service, your license needs may shift depending on the day's target. A standard angling license covers both freshwater and saltwater, but specific endorsements may apply.

  • Ocean Fishing: Starting in 2026, a new Ocean Endorsement is required for most saltwater fishing from a boat, costing $4 daily or $9 annually for both residents and non-residents. This is not required if you are only taking salmon, steelhead, or shellfish.
  • River and Estuary: For trips on the Umpqua River or within Coos Bay, your standard license and any necessary species-specific tags (like the Combined Angling Tag for salmon) are typically all you need.

Special Exemptions and Discounts

Oregon encourages young anglers and honored veterans to get out on the water with several discounted options:

  • Youth: Children under age 12 do not need a license to fish or harvest shellfish. For those aged 12 to 17, a Youth Combo License is only $10 and includes fishing, shellfish, and the new Ocean Endorsement.
  • Seniors: Oregon residents aged 70 or older who have lived in the state for at least five years can purchase a Senior Angler license for $34.
  • Veterans and Military: Discounted or free licenses are available for active uniformed service members and disabled veterans. Notably, the resident Pioneer License for long-term senior residents is $10 and includes the Ocean Endorsement.

Where to Buy Your License

You can conveniently purchase your license and tags through the MyODFW website or the MyODFW mobile app, which allows for paperless "e-tagging" even when you are out of cell range. If you prefer a physical copy, licenses are available at many local retailers, bait and tackle shops, and the ODFW office in Charleston located right near the marina. Ensuring you have the correct documentation ready before your trip allows you to focus on what matters most: the "One More" cast that leads to your next big catch.
