Meet Captain Will Merritt

Thirty-Five Years Of Local Oregon Fishing Expertise

Captain Will Merritt brings over 35 years of local fishing expertise to every outing, offering a deep-rooted knowledge of the Oregon coast’s complex waterways. Having spent decades navigating the unique intersection of the Pacific Ocean and the Umpqua River, he has developed a specialized understanding of seasonal migrations and technical angling techniques. His approach is defined by the "One More" philosophy—a commitment to staying on the water and putting in the extra effort until his guests are truly satisfied with their experience.

Beyond his technical proficiency with species like Albacore tuna, Pacific halibut, and Chinook salmon, Captain Will is known for his patient and friendly demeanor. He finds genuine fulfillment in sharing his craft with others, whether he is guiding a seasoned angler through a challenging river run or helping a young child land their very first fish. This focus on education and guest satisfaction has built a reputation for reliability and trust within the Charleston and Coos Bay communities.

Safety and preparation are the cornerstones of Captain Will’s operations, ensuring that every guest feels secure and well-informed from the moment they step onto the dock. His extensive background allows him to monitor real-time conditions and weather patterns with a practiced eye, making the necessary adjustments to keep his trips both productive and comfortable. By combining professional-grade equipment with a lifetime of local insight, he provides a grounded and authentic perspective on what makes fishing in this region so exceptional.

The One More Guide Service Fleet

Guests at One More Guide Service fish from a fleet specifically chosen to handle the diverse environments of the Oregon coast. For offshore and deep-sea trips, the 22-foot Navigator Sport provides a stable and capable platform, equipped with modern technology including electric reels to assist with deepwater halibut hauls. When the focus shifts to the scenic bends of the Umpqua River, Captain Will utilizes a 17-foot North River drift boat, designed for the precision and stealth required for successful salmon and steelhead angling. Both vessels are meticulously maintained to ensure they are always ready for the next day on the water.

What You Need to Bring

To ensure your comfort and legal compliance, please make sure every member of your party has the following:

1. Fishing License & Tags

Every guest aged 12 and older must have a valid Oregon Angling License. If we are targeting Salmon, Steelhead, or Halibut, you will also need the appropriate harvest tags.

Pro Tip: You can purchase and print your license at home or use the MyODFW app on your phone.

2. Appropriate Clothing (The "Oregon Layer" Rule)

The weather in Charleston and on the Umpqua can change in minutes. We recommend:

Layers: A moisture-wicking base, a warm mid-layer (fleece), and a waterproof outer shell.

Footwear: Non-slip, waterproof boots or shoes with good traction. Please avoid black-soled boots that scuff the deck.

Protection: Even on overcast days, the reflection off the water can cause sunburn. Bring a hat, polarized sunglasses, and sunscreen.

3. Food & Beverages

Fishing until everyone is tired requires fuel!

Lunch & Snacks: Pack a cooler with easy-to-eat meals, sandwiches, and high-energy snacks.

Hydration: Bring plenty of water and your preferred non-alcoholic beverages.

4. Personal Items

A Small Cooler: Leave this in your vehicle to transport your catch home after we fillet it for you.

Seasickness Medication: If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking a remedy (like Dramamine) the night before and the morning of your trip.

Camera/Phone: To capture those "One More" moments.

Meeting Times & Locations

Ocean & Crabbing Trips: Most trips depart at 5:00 AM from the Charleston Marina (63534 Kingfisher Rd, Charleston, OR).

Umpqua River Trips: Meeting spots vary based on the season and water levels. Captain Will will contact you directly 24–48 hours before your trip to confirm the exact boat ramp.

DEPOSIT: A deposit is required for all bookings and will be applied at checkout

BALANCE: The remaining balance is due on the trip date as either Credit or Cash.
